Scientific or graphing calculator? What should students buy?

As they grow older their school supply lists could become shorter, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily more expensive.

One item that can cause sticker shock to parents of middle and high school students is a specially designed calculator. Most schools prefer students to use their own scientific calculator. In higher math classes, like AP Calculus, a graphing calculator may be required.

What is the difference? A scientific calculator can perform tasks beyond subtraction, subtraction division and multiplication. Scientific calculators typically have specific buttons for parentheses trigonometric functions, exponents pi, and inverses -- as well as other functions.

A graphing calculator does even more. It will have a larger screen that allows you to input a function and after which you can see a graph for it.

Harmony Weinberg, Edmonds School District's media and public relations supervisor says to KOMO News each individual school is responsible for its own policy.

"For higher level classes, like AP Calculus, it is often expected that students have a handheld graphing calculator, such as TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89."

Calculators of this type are perfect for AP tests. Weinberg also says schools are able to set up a system where students can use calculators in the same way as they would texts, in the event that they cannot or choose not to buy their own.

Within the Edmonds school district calculators are dealt with in a similar manner to textbooks in terms of damages or losses, however, they don't have any fees to use.

Another option could have a laptop from their school. Weinberg states that that in Edmonds "all students have access to scientific and graphing calculators through their district-issued Chromebook." The district also encourages teachers and teachers to use Desmos online calculators, as these are utilized in state-wide assessments as well.

West Seattle family says school policy on quarantine is biased against children who are not vaccinated

SEATTLE A family from West Seattle say their young son was told to stay at home when his contact with people who had been tested positive for COVID-19, prompting his family members to say that he was targeted and treated differently by officials from the school district because the boy was not vaccinated..

The previous week, a 12-year-old student attending Denny International Middle School was exposed to a student in class who was diagnosed with COVID-19.

School officials advised the student to stay at home for two weeks because they did not believe he was vaccinated.

His relatives said they have since learned that had he been vaccinated, the 7th grade student would not be forced to miss class for as long as he didn't show any symptoms from the virus.

"My kid has no symptoms," said Jeremy Gollyhorn, the boy's father. "He's completely healthy. Why is it that he doesn't get an unfavorable COVID test and return to school?"

Gollyhorn claimed that his son is being treated differently than students who have had their shots. And even when he had a negative COVID-19 exam, the boy would not be allowed to return to school until the two-week quarantine period has ended.

However, those close to them who have been fully vaccinated, and who show no symptoms do not require to quarantine and can return to school, but they are advised to be tested three-to-five days later in order to be certain.

Gollyhorn declared it to be absurd and makes no sense.

"Vaccinated people can still spread COVID too so what's the difference there?" said the doctor. stated.

A spokesperson told us that Seattle Public Schools is following guidelines on public health that are set by the state.

Gollyhorn claimed that the law strips people of their right to choose. The doctor added that his family doesn't trust vaccines , and incidents like this are what make him want oppose the policy.

In the year since Seattle Public Schools started the school year on September. 1st, the district has reported 117 positive COVID-19 cases as well as Denny International Middle School has reported four positive cases during the time period.

It's unclear how many faculty and students have been told to remain in quarantine because of exposures. However, such absences are considered to be excused.
